A University of Arizona Police Department K-9 won second place in a recent contest of police skills.

Bear, a 4-year-old German Shepherd, competed in the National Police K-9 Trials' six events, including narcotics identification and obedience, and was named "Reserve Champion," a UAPD news release stated.

The contest ran Nov. 15 through 17 in Reid Park, UAPD Lt. Brian Seastone said. UA Police Chief Mike Thomas said the contest was sponsored by the Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association and was hosted by the Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff's Office, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and the U.S. Border Patrol.

Forty-four dogs from police organizations around the western United States competed in the competition.

Seastone said no UAPD dog has done this well before.

Bear has been with UAPD since he was one year old and is handled by Sgt. Gerardo Garcia, Seastone said. He said the dog is assigned to UAPD's Mount Graham operations and also assists with Graham County narcotics investigations.

Garcia and Bear have been partners for two years, Seastone said.
