Most athletic department funds do not come from UA alumni

Editor:

I am writing in response to Craig Degel's Dec. 5 column "Thoughts on athletic dep't fundraising." I am an athlete on the track team, and sure, we could use some more money, but I think you have the wrong idea about where our money comes from - 34.2 percent of the athletic department's annual funds come from gate receipts and 23.3 percent comes from television and radio. Only 13.3 percent comes from benefactors such as alumni Jim Click, George Kalil, and Wells Fargo.

I would love to say that golf, track, and tennis are money-making sports, but that's not the case. The bottom line is that without football and men's basketball, we wouldn't have an athletic program. Do you have any idea what kind of money a bowl brings in? As far as Jim Livengood's plans, they are most likely for a new weight room, and that would benefit all the sports programs.
