Retired professor becomes head of Nutritional SciencesStraight out of a short retirement, Frederick Wolfe was named the new head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Agriculture.Wolfe took office on Dec. 30, replacing former head Ralph Price. Wolfe received his doctorate in chemistry from Texas Tech University. He then taught at the Department of Food Science at the University of Alberta in Canada and served as chair of that department for 10 years. When Wolfe retired to Green Valley in 1993 he discovered that gardening and other hobbies associated with retirement were not for him. "I was tired of being retired," he said. Wolfe then decided to become involved at the University of Arizona. He taught an introductory course in nutritional sciences at the UA before being appointed department head. "I'm doing now what I do best," Wolfe said. He said he is now starting his second career and has many plans for the department. Wolfe said he wants to elevate the profile of activities around campus, provide public education and link different departments within the college of agriculture. More students that are aware of the department will mean more students who will enroll in the program, Wolfe said. |
