UA gymnasts triumph in Bay Area meet

With a vast improvement on beam routines and strong performances by sophomore standout Heidi Hornbeek, senior Becky Bowers and freshman Keiman Andrews, Arizona was able to top the rest of the field Friday night in Berkeley, Calif.

The ninth-ranked Wildcats (3-1) won three of the four events: the vault, beam, and bars en route to topping California, Illinois-Chicago and Iowa in the four-way meet. Arizona finished with a score of 193.450, California took second with 192.775, Illinois-Chicago claimed third with 190.350 and Iowa finished last with 187.875.

In the vault, Andrews, Hornbeek, and Cal's Candice Kwok tied for first place. All three scored a 9.90. Arizona finished with a team score of 48.775. UA also claimed first in the bars, with Bowers and Hornbeek tying for first place with a 9.85. The Wildcats score was 48.200.

The key to the victory was the beam routines. The team earned a 48.825 with all six gymnasts sticking their routines. Although Cal's Mindy Omellas topped the event with a 9.85, Hornbeek took second with a 9.8, and sophomore Maureen Kealy, in her first meet since having surgery in the fall, took third with a 9.775.

"This is the first time in years I can remember going six for six," assistant coach Bill Ryden said. "That's incredible for us."

In the all-around, the Wildcats took the top two spots, with Hornbeek scoring a 39.30 and Poggemeyer finishing with a 38.825.

Arizona will return to action on Friday, when they travel to Minneapolis to face No. 8 Minnesota.
