Tennis players fall in semifinals of Pac-10s

The Arizona women's tennis team suffered from a bad case of semifinal flamout at the Pacific 10 Conference Indoor Championships in Seattle over the weekend.

Junior All-American Vicky Maes, senior Stephanie Sammaritano and freshman Anne Laurence Bilenne reached the semifinals of their respective singles flights on Saturday, but no player could advance any farther.

Maes, who is tied with Stanford's Katie Schlukebir for the No. 7 ranking nationally, lost to Schlukebir in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-4. Schlukebir went on to win the singles championship.

Sammaritano, who is ranked No. 66 nationally, lost in the semifinals of the No. 2 singles flight to UCLA's Kelly Rudolph, 6-3, 6-0. Sammaritano had advanced to the semifinals by defeating Southern Cal's Nicole London, 6-2, 7-5 in the second round on Friday and had a come from behind win over California's Stephanie Tibbits 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Flight No. 2 also featured Wildcat Khristen Pietrucha, who was knocked out by Stanford's Julie Scott, 6-4, 6-3 in Saturday's quarterfinals.

Bilenne, who is from Belgium and joined the team over the semester break, performed well in her first tournament as a Wildcat, reaching the semifinals of No. 3 singles flight.

Her run ended when she lost to Stanford's Jennifer Heiser, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In addition to reaching the semifinals in singles action, Maes and Bilenne paired up in the No. 1 doubles competition to advance to the semifinals.
