Wildcat fans attending the first football game Saturday may experience some difficulty finding parking, but it is not impossible, according to Parking and Transportation Services."Everything between Highland and Campbell, and Seventh Street and the University of Arizona Mall are reserved lots," said Dick Strayer, program coordinator of Parking and Transportation Services. He added that all meter spaces within those boundaries are controlled.
"Whenever there are special events, it is necessary to close off lots to accommodate guests," Strayer said.
Parking and Transportation Services controls approximately 4,000 out of 11,000 total spaces on game day, said Strayer.
He said signs are posted in the parking lots several days in advance to notify motorists of the parking change.
Any lot that is available to the public for $5 is free to the permit holders of that lot, Strayer said.
One hundred spaces on the west side of the stadium and 40 on the east side are reserved for handicapped motorists. They can also park on the first floor of the Cherry Avenue Garage.
The parking lots west of Park Avenue will be available for permit holders to park in, and motorists will be shuttled to the stadium from there.
There will also be short-term courtesy parking until four hours prior to kickoff. Motorists who are not going to the game, but still need to access parking, will be allowed to park in available spaces at the discretion of Parking and Transportation Services.
Going to the tailgate party, which begins at 2 p.m. north of McKale Center, is a smart way to find a parking space, said Strayer. He encouraged people to arrive early to avoid parking lot traffic right before the game.
Another alternative to finding parking is to park away from campus and ride the Sun Tran to the stadium.
Sun Tran offers shuttle service from five locations around Tucson to the stadium area on East Sixth Street, between North Highland Avenue and North Cherry Avenue. The cost is $1 each way ($2 per game), or $12 for a season pass.
Riders can purchase season shuttle passes at boarding locations on game days, which are prorated for games two through six.
When boarding to and from games, riders paying on a per-game basis must have equivalent change or dollar bills to insert into Sun Tran's new electronic fare boxes.
Wildcat fans can ride the shuttles from the following locations: El Con Mall (northeast corner behind the mall), Park Mall (south end of the mall opposite the Mann Theaters), Pima Community College (West Campus, south side), Smith's Shopping Center (southwest corner, I-19 and Irvington Road) or the Tucson Mall (northwest corner, east of American Home Furnishings).
The shuttles will start running two hours before game time and run continuously until kickoff. After the game, Sun Tran will return riders to their boarding locations. All locations provide wheelchair access.
