By Staff reports Arizona Daily Wildcat January 31, 1997 Ex-Wildcat elected to college hall of fame
LARCHMONT, N.Y. - Former Arizona All-American Ricky Hunley was among 12 players elected yesterday to the College Football Hall of Fame. Hunley was a linebacker at Arizona from 1980-83 and was UA's first consensus All-American - a distinction he held in 1982 and 1983. Hunley led the Wildcats in tackles in each of his three years at UA. In 1982, Hunley was credited for 100 solo tackles and for assisting on 73. He still shares a piece of the Arizona record for most fumbles caused in a season with five. Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers and two-time Outland Trophy recipient Dave Rimington were two of the bigger names on the list. Rogers won the Heisman as a running back for South Carolina in 1980, and remains the Gamecocks' career leader in several offensive categories, including yards rushing with 5,204. He was an All-American in 1979-80. ''I am both numbed and honored to be selected for the College Football Hall of Fame,'' Rogers said. Rimington is the only player ever to repeat as winner of the Outland, given annually to the best interior lineman in college football. Also selected by members of the National Football Foundation on its 50th anniversary were Ray Beck, Randy Duncan, Dave Elmendorf, Charlie Flowers, Alex Kroll, Ken MacAfee, Bob Reifsnyder, Dave Robinson and Danny White. The ceremony will be held Dec. 9 in New York.
