UA senior rugby player Paul Gause is pulled out of a scrum during Friday's match at Esteven Field. The UA rugby team won both of its games this weekend and is now 4-0 on the spring season.

The Arizona rugby team, which blew out San Diego and then won a much closer match against San Diego State this weekend, is setting its sights on going to the national playoffs.

By beating the Aztecs, 7-6, Arizona improved its record to 4-0, which means it only needs three more wins to make the playoffs.

"This is the best team we have had in the last ten years," UA assistant coach David King said after the lopsided 68-12 victory against the Torreros.

In the last two weeks, the Wildcats were able to defeat three of the best teams in the league, including Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo, 21-10, UC-Santa Barbara, 28-18 and San Diego State.

Last year the Wildcats lost to San Diego State 22-13 on the road, but Friday was different. Outside center Al Lakomskis had a solid day, scoring the try for the Wildcats.

"We're finally fitting in together," team captain Tom Scholzen said.

"The team is a group of great guys and I think the club is going to have talent for at least two to three more years."

The Wildcats next home game is on Feb. 17 against California, which has won 12 of the last 15 national championships.
