KAMP radio should broaden musical rotation if it wants favorable votes

Editor:

The issue of whether or not a $1 fee will be added to students' tuition in order to fund KAMP student radio has been a topic of debate and question, as stated in the Feb.13 issue of the Daily Wildcat. I greatly commend the staff of KAMP, ASUA, and other interested students, faculty and administrators for taking this initiative to motivate the student body into a common interest on campus.

However, what KAMP needs to keep in mind is that University of Arizona students are making an investment when they agree to this cost in addition to their tuition. On Feb. 13, Allen Wagner is quoted as saying, "We have to convince everyone to say yes now."

My question for Wagner and the rest of the KAMP staff is whether or not they have in turn invested in the interests of those who they hope to be prospective listeners. If KAMP hopes to appeal to the student body and convince them to apply this fee to their tuition statements, their music must reflect this petition.

It is my understanding that KAMP limits its listening selection to specific types of music.

While KAMP's music selection is enjoyed by numerous listeners on campus, I do not feel that it is representative of all the variations of music of the UA's student body.

The marketing director of KAMP was also quoted as saying, "This is the most crucial phase," when referring to whether or not the KAMP staff can receive the vote of students for the go-ahead for their referendum.

Upon approaching the student body with this proposal, KAMP should keep in mind who is responsible for the real upkeep and operation of the station: The listeners.

I wish KAMP the best of luck with approving their request, and agree that they deserve the necessary improvements to their facilities.

Still, I hope KAMP will take the initiative to take note of the needs of their listeners; they can then invoke a better response among their potential voters.
