Softball gets offensive in ASU's Coca-Cola Classic

The Arizona softball team came out of the Arizona State Coca-Cola Classic unscathed with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Classic, a round-robin tournament at the Cave Creek Sports Complex in Phoenix. pitted UA against Texas, UNLV, UC-Santa Barbara, Nebraska and Utah State.

The No. 1 ranked Wildcats buried their opponents by a combined score of 54-6 in their first road trip. Which may of been worse had the games against 19th-ranked Nebraska, UCSB and Utah State had not been stopped in the fifth inning due to a mercy rule.

Strong pitching and explosive hitting were keys in all of the Wildcat wins.

Pitchers Carrie Dolan (5-0) and Nancy Evans (5-0) dominated the opposition. Evans was one out away from a shutout against Nebraska, when All-American Ali Viola ended it with a two-run home run. Dolan carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Texas, before the the Longhornes eventualy scored in the UA's 6-2 win.

Lety Pineda and Leah Braatz each had three home runs over the weekend.
