Bricks thrown through three UA windows

A group identifying itself as El Ejercito Xicano de Liberacion Aztlan threw rocks wrapped in papers containing political messages through the windows of three UA buildings early yesterday morning.

At 3:30 a.m., a custodial worker found that a paper-wrapped rock had been thrown through the glass pane of a south entrance door of the Administration building, 1401 E. University Blvd., according to university police reports.

Police also responded to similar calls at Babcock Inn, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd., and the Park Student Union, 615 N. Park Ave., about the same time, reports stated.

University of Arizona Police Department Cmdr. Brian Seastone said the incident appears to be a random act.

The rock-delivered messages stated, "We demand reparations for the continuous years of theft, murder, racketeering, oppression and colonization upon our Gente," and were signed EXLA, reports stated.

The windows at all three buildings were replaced yesterday.

Seastone said it is unknown whether the buildings were specifically targeted.

Babcock Hall Director Sue Brichler said a window to a student's room was broken but no one was inside at the time.

Brichler said she knows of no reason why the Babcock Inn would have been singled out by the group. Members of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan, a UA Chicano students' organization, denounced the actions of the El Ejercito Xicano de Liberacion Aztlan yesterday.

"As MEChA, we don't involve ourselves in that kind of action," a member said. "We hold marches and civil disobedience."

Members asked that their names be withheld because they did not wish to be associated with the EXLA.
