'Weapons free' equals 'Disarmed Victim'

To the Editor:

It is with great dismay that I read of the latest shooting incident at our institution ("2 shot outside Park Union," Feb. 16). How can this be? We have signs at every entrance to this campus prohibiting firearms. Hummmm, let's see, these shootings occurred at night.

Now I begin to see the problem. Those misguided souls carrying guns could not read our poorly illuminated "Weapons Free Zone" signs strategically located at all entrances to campus and the Student Unions.

I suggest that the administration get on the ball and immediately install the proper lighting that an important safeguard such as those signs deserve. Wait, even better, how about loudspeakers at all campus entrances blaring out the warning that the UA is a "Disarmed Victim..." whoops, I meant "Weapons Free Zone" (in the international languages of French, Spanish, and English, of course).

Or perhaps, could it be that the ill-conceived policy represented by these signs is designed simply to placate lawyers at the risk of disarming law abiding citizens?
