Rugby team continues to roll

The UA rugby team taught its in-state rival from the north a lesson Saturday in Tempe.

UA (9-3, 5-2) shut out ASU 33-0, extending its winning streak over the Sun Devils to nine games and increased its series advantage to 34-12-1.

"I expected us to play well against them and if I were to grade us I would give us a B+," Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said.

UA also beat ASU Jan. 31 by a score of 35-12. Saturday's victory extended the Wildcats' current streak to four games, although it might not have been their prettiest win of the season.

"We lost our poise and direction at times and we didn't execute anything as well as we could have," Sitton said. "We executed well about 70 percent of the time and the other 30 we were disciplined enough to get the job done."

Although Alan Lakomskis was pulled at the half to protect his shoulder, Zach Harrison and John Shumway returned from injuries. UA also got another great game out of fullback Chris Kron.

"We just played hard and dominated them position by position," Sitton said.

The Wildcats will try to continue their winning ways as they take on the Truman State Bucks today at Estevan Park with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. The Bucks have advanced to college rugby's "Great Eight" the last two seasons.

"They are a very well coached team and successful program," Sitton said. "We expect a hard-fought game that is going to be played very well."

The Bucks opened their season with a 55-12 win over Kansas last weekend.
