Rugby team wins fifth straight

The Arizona rugby club team continued to roll with the sweet sounds of victory Tuesday at Estevan Park.

The Wildcats (10-3, 5-2), playing without four starters, defeated the Truman State Bucks 20-10.

"We got some great performances out of everyone and it was just fun to watch as a coach," Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said.

UA has now won five games in a row. Tuesday's win awarded the Wildcats their fifth straight double-digit win season.

Arizona took an early and short-lived lead as Zach Harrison kicked a 25-yard field goal, which was immediately followed by a Bucks try.

After that, UA fullback and captain Chris Kron, as well as center Al Lakomskis took over.

Kron scored two trys on the day while Lakomskis added one.

"Kron is definitely a good leader," Sitton said. "But it is interesting with our group because there are several players responsible for our renaissance as a rugby club."

Harrison contributed a conversion to go along with his opening field goal to round out UA's scoring.

"We have won five in a row and that is always nice, but we still have a ways to go in the season and it starts this weekend in California," Sitton said.

The Wildcats have their toughest challenge of the season this weekend when they take on a top rugby school from British Columbia, Simon Frasier University, in the California Invitational, which is hosted by the defending national champions California Bears. The Kansas Jayhawks are also in the tournament.

"The Cal program is 125 years old and we will be playing on a $3 million field," Sitton said. "It is going to be an outstanding experience for our guys."

The Wildcats' first challenge is going to be Simon Frasier.

"An interesting fact is that in British Columbia high school rugby is the dominant sport, so these guys have a lot of experience and can play with anybody in the world," Sitton said.
