Two arrested in campus police chase

Two teen-agers who led university police on a chase that ended when their vehicle crashed through a gate at the UA motor pool now face charges including armed robbery and grand theft auto.

University police responded to a report at 10:39 p.m. March 12 that the victim of a car theft was following two people riding in her stolen 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass south on North Park Avenue from East Speedway Boulevard and using a cellular telephone to report the incident to Tucson police, university police reports stated.

University police officers spotted the car, reportedly driven by Shane D. McMillan, 18, of the 600 block of West Alturas Street, as it turned left on East Sixth Street.

Tucson police reported that the car was involved in an armed robbery earlier that day at the Holiday Inn Palo Verde, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road, reports stated.

McMillan lead police through several stop signs and made several turns, before finding his way to campus and slamming through the gate of the Facilities Management motor pool, 1220 E. Lowell Road, reports stated.

Police ran after McMillan and his passenger, identified as Justin C. Collins, 17, of the 800 block of West Vancouver Street, while the stolen car continued to roll through the parking area, reports stated. McMillan was arrested on charges of unlawful flight from pursuing law enforcement vehicles, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, striking fixtures on a highway without notifying owner and interference with the peaceful conduct of an educational institution. Collins was arrested on an interference with the peaceful conduct of educational institution charge.

McMillan and Collins were then taken to the Pima County Jail by Pima County Sheriff's detectives in connection with the armed robbery, and Tucson police also added charges of grand theft auto, reports stated. Collins remained in custody yesterday in lieu of $10,000 bond. Jail officials said they had no record that McMillan was in custody.
