IFC a group of 'low-rent prison guards'

To the Editor:

I could not help but be awed by the blatant lack of awareness displayed by Brian L. Szatkowski in his letter concerning Ezekiel Buchheit's attack on the fraternity system ("IFC pities columnist's attitude," Mar. 23). I was a member of a large fraternity here at the University of Arizona last semester, and witnessed countless inhuman acts fueled by drunken stupidity. There are innumerable examples of fraternity members who have "stripped themselves of everything that makes them decent human beings," and these "people" form the inherent fabric of the fraternity system. Of course, such distasteful qualities do not apply to all fraternity members; these subhuman, alcohol-infused mutations of life are not ubiquitous.

Perhaps Brian L. Szatkowski, Interfraternity Council Vice-President of Public Relations, is commiserating with fraternity members just as a low-rent prison guard attempts to sympathize with the criminals he controls; his apparent understanding is only a thin facade. If this is not the case, and Mr. Szatkowski thinks that all is well beneath the cloak of the Greek system, then Mr. Szatkowski is blind.
