Women's tennis team slays Texas, men split road trip

UA's women's tennis team entered the Texas tennis den yesterday and emerged with a last-match win over the Longhorns.

The Wildcats beat ninth-ranked Texas on the road with a 5-4 match play score after Betsy Miringoff, a UA senior, and junior Monique Allegre notched an 8-6 clinching-victory at the No. 2 doubles slot in the final match of the day.

Both Allegre and senior Vicky Maes outlasted their opponents in two-hour marathons to win in singles play.

Those two victories helped No. 19 Arizona claim five of six single matches.

Meanwhile, No. 41 Arizona men's tennis team stenciled a 5-2 win over No. 60 Oregon with stellar support from singles players in the No. 3 through six slots yesterday.

Sophomore Michel Stopa downed Carlos Navarro 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, while senior Mike MacKay handed Joaquin Hamdin a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 defeat. In doubles play senior Roland Kupka and freshman Adnan Nova won.

Friday in Seattle, the team was drowned 5-2 by No. 27 Washington. Arizona now stands at 5-9 on the season and 2-7 in the Pac-10.
