UA gymnasts fall short of Nationals

Not much has gone right for the injury-stricken UA gymnastics team this season. But theWildcats still turned in a good effort in Saturday's NCAA Regionals.

No. 22 Arizona scored a 194.75 to finish fourth in a tough region with top-ranked Utah (195.575), ninth-ranked Arizona State (195.025) and No. 11 Brigham Young (195.500) rounding out the top three.

Arizona's score marked the season's second best, but fell short of sending the team to Los Angeles for the NCAA National Championships.

The Wildcats had near-historic beam performances, scoring a 49.100. Seniors Tenli Poggemeyer and Rose McLaughlin paved the way with scores of 9.9 and 9.825 respectively.

Poggemeyer won the beam event with a 9.9 and will compete in the Nationals in that event. Poggemeyer and freshman Kara Fry finished in the region's top seven in the all around with scores of 38.825 and 38.925 respectively. If those scores are good enough to rank in the top 12 nationally after all of the team qualifiers have been removed, both could continue on in the Nationals.
