UA softball unsatisfied at the top

For a team that is 47-3 overall and raced through the first half of the Pacific 10 Conference season with only one blemish against 13 wins, one would imagine the Arizona softball players and coaches might be 100 percent satisfied with their performance thus far.

On the contrary, the Wildcats insist they have yet to play a complete game from the first pitch to the final out.

"We have had several games where we have played five or six good innings," UA head coach Mike Candrea said. "But we seem to have one or two innings where we make a few mistakes and get careless with what we are doing. We can't do that as we get closer to Regionals and playoff time."

Candrea's biggest concern is the difference in his team's performance between game one and game two of doubleheaders.

"We sometimes aren't as focused in the second game as the first," Candrea said. "Our focus still needs to be on taking things one pitch at a time and make sure we do everything right the first time."

Despite blowing the perfect game, Arizona has won nine straight and 27 of its last 28 dating back to early March, including the 13 conference wins.

"It is very competitive and much improved from years past. We still have to be prepared for every game," Candrea said.

This weekend's games will match Arizona against Oregon and Oregon State, teams the Wildcats swept on the road a month ago.

That trip, senior Nancy Evans collected three of the four wins, including an 18-11 victory over the Ducks in the second game of that doubleheader.

UA plays the Ducks tonight at 6 and the Beavers tomorrow at 6 p.m. Both are doubleheaders and will be played at Rita Hillenbrand Stadium.
