Sidelines

Taken a stroll though McKale Center recently? Anyone who has might have noticed some slight renovation. The floor, home of basketball and volleyball games and gymnastics meets, is being torn up and replaced with new wood.

As the construction process of beginning this new era turns toward completion, all UA staff members, coaches, trainers, and of course student-athletes - past and present - are in the midst of leaving their marks on the infant floor.

The Wildcats and other members of the McKale family were asked to each take a piece of wood from the new floor and write whatever they wished on the bottom side. The pieces will be installed along with the rest of the court as a tribute to the history of UA Athletics.

So, long after the fresh smell of lumber diminishes from the McKale floor, a new generation will be ripping up an old one that bears the signatures of those who played before the turn of the millennium.

Briefly

The UA Wrestling Club will be holding a recruiting tournament at the Rec Center May 2.

The first annual Arizona Open invites high school juniors and seniors interested in attending the UA to participate in the intramural event in order to publicize the club's existence.

Several high school students from throughout the city are scheduled to take part as well as wrestlers from Emory Riddle and Phoenix College and members from the current Wildcat team. Anyone is welcome to participate in the recruiting tourney. Any questions should be directed to Tom Pike, the club president, at 388-9704.

Kevin O'Donnell, Chris Stinson, Max Webber, Laurance Bass and Dave Ames were among the five Laxcats who were named to the Division I South All-Star Team. They will be playing with all-stars from Arizona State, Chapman, Loyola Marymount, UCLA and Whittier on Saturday at 8 p.m. against the Division I North All-Stars in Stockton, Calif., which is the sight for the WCLL Final Four.

By the Numbers

19,485:

The number of people in the community addressed by UA student-athletes during the fall of 1997 through the Smith Project Speakers Bureau. As a whole, Wildcat athletes volunteered over 150 hours of their spare time to community service in the fall semester alone.
