Police Beat

University police officers took a Tucson man to University Medical Center for psychological examinations Thursday after an employee reported he had been wandering for an hour inside the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd.

The man, a Safford resident, entered the library about 1 a.m. and asked an employee if he could use the restroom, police reports stated.

The employee again saw the man, whom he described to police as a "transient," an hour later wandering between different floors of the library, reports stated.

Police arrived about 2:30 a.m. and found the man asleep at the southeast end of the third floor, reports stated.

The man told police he was manic-depressive and psychotic, and officers took him to UMC, where he was admitted for psychological analysis.

A student told university police Thursday his "aging" computer had been taken in January from a first-floor room at McClelland Hall, 1130 E. Helen St.

There were no signs of forced entry at the room from which the student's 4900 CT Toshiba laptop computer was taken, and six people have a key to the door, police reports stated.

The student told police the computer was worth $8,000 when he bought it in 1995 but was now "an older and aging unit," which is "hardly able to boot up," reports stated.

The student told police he does not remember anybody suspicious in the area and no other items had been taken from him.

A student told university police Thursday somebody had taken her bicycle from the west side of Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall, 1000 N. Park Ave.

The student told police she locked her $300 Diamondback ladies mountain bike to a bike block near the dorm about 5 p.m. April 20.

She returned at 9:15 a.m. the next day and discovered her bike and lock missing, police reports stated.

A custodial worker reported finding graffiti Thursday inside a men's restroom at the Chemistry and Biological Sciences building, 1340 E. University Blvd.

The employee told a supervisor, who then called university police at 9 a.m. and told them somebody spray painted the east bathroom wall, police reports stated.

The lavatory had been locked at 10 p.m. Wednesday, and police found no other damage to the area, reports stated.

A student told police Thursday that a "dust devil" had broken the rear window of her pickup truck's camper shell while it was parked in a lot near East Helen Street and North Warren Avenue.

Police discovered the vehicle in the lot with a broken window the previous day and left a business card asking her to call university police if she discovered anything missing, police reports stated.

The student later called police and said the window was broken at 5:30 p.m. the previous day by a "dust devil," a twirling funnel of dust and debris kicked up by opposing air currents.

Police Beat is compiled from official University of Arizona Police Department reports.
