Fraternity massacres helpless, hungry fish

Delta Chi fraternity left 180 fish to die in the gutter outside their house in the aftermath of a luau-themed party.

Crushed, hungry and bleeding fish lined the street in front of the fraternity house, 1701 E. First St., Sunday afternoon.

The Delta Chi members emptied the pond Sunday morning, sending the little fish cascading down two flights of stairs in front of the house and into the gutter, Brice Menaugh, Delta Chi's spokesman said.

"We didn't mean to be fishy killers," he said.

Menaugh said half of the 180 were dead the morning after the bash, and the fraternity members tried to save some of the fish by putting them in the fraternity swimming pool.

"I don't mean to be downplaying the fish," said Delta Chi President Troy Googins. "I mean, I love animals, too."

Googins and Menaugh said the fraternity had no plan for the fish after the party.

"When we bought them, we thought some of them would die," Menaugh said.

But not all of them did.

Two UA students were riding down the bicycle path when they chanced on the gutter of fish.

Dance and Spanish major Amy DeLong brought 70 fish home in milk cartons, although 20 of them died within half an hour.

"I just think they are a bunch of chillers who have no respect for any life forms but themselves," DeLong said.

Menaugh apologized on behalf of the fraternity.

"Tell the girls we're sorry," he said.
