By Chris Jackson UA Baseball team takes 2 of 3 at ASU
The Wildcats (31-21 overall, 11-16 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) won 10-9 yesterday to take the rubber game of the series from the No. 10 Sun Devils (32-16, 18-8). They also won Friday's game by a run, 8-7, in 10 innings. UA senior right fielder Colin Porter was the hero of the series after his solo home runs in the top of the eighth yesterday and in the top of the 10th on Friday gave UA the two wins. "I was in the right place at the right time," he said. "I saw the ball good the whole weekend." UA head coach Jerry Stitt agreed that his right fielder "really had a great series. "In all three games he hit the ball well, got on base, and yesterday he made a great diving catch to save some runs," Stitt said. "He's the player of the week in my mind." Porter said Arizona's offense was the key to turning around UA's fortunes against the Sun Devils. "I think we started hitting like we're capable of," he said. "The whole team hit well all weekend." Arizona State swept the series in Tucson earlier this month and won five of six in Tucson while UA is 4-2 in its last six trips to Tempe. ASU won Saturday's slugfest by the score of 16-13, and that defeat means it will be difficult for Arizona to get into regionals as the Wildcats can no longer finish with a winning record in the Six-Pac. No team with a losing conference record has ever made it to regionals out of the Six-Pac. "I guess we're still possible for getting a bid to postseason," Porter said. "If we can put in a big winning streak to end the season, then maybe we'll get in." Stitt said he thinks the team should make regionals, but he added, "I don't make those decisions." Arizona lefty closer Ryan Moskau came in to record the save yesterday, his seventh of the year and 13th of his career, tying him for the UA career record with Joe Estes and Carlos Rico. UA junior Darrell Hussman (4-5) picked up the win in relief of starter Dave Abbott yesterday. He went 2 2/3 innings while giving up only three hits and one walk while striking out two. It was Hussman's first win since Feb. 27 against California. Other UA hitters who came up big yesterday include freshman shortstop Keoni DeRenne (3 for 4, two RBI) and freshman third baseman Erik Torres (4 for 5, three RBI). The Wildcats have only four more games remaining in the season, starting with their home finale against Grand Canyon tomorrow night at 7. Arizona then travels to play at California for a three-game series starting Friday.
