Women's lacrosse team out for a little revenge

The Arizona women's lacrosse team might have a sense of deja vu going into Saturday's 4 p.m. playoff semifinal in San Diego against UC-Davis.

Last year the Aggies and Wildcats met in the Western Women's Lacrosse League's semifinals, and UCD rolled to a 12-4 victory en route to its fourth title in five years.

This year could be a different story, though.

Arizona is the No. 1 seed out of the South Division while the Aggies come into the game as only the No. 3 seed from the North.

When asked if his team was looking for a little payback, UA head coach Josh Dreiband said, "absolutely."

UA senior midfielder and team captain Jessica Deal was equally adamant.

"Definitely, and I think we can do it this year," she said.

This year marks the fourth straight season in which Arizona has advanced to the Final Four, but it has never gotten any farther.

"It's always been the two teams from the North playing for the title," Deal said. "This year we hope to change that."

Dreiband said the difference last year was in the strength of UCD's second and third lines.

"We didn't have the depth that they did. This year we'll be trying to hold the ball behind the net, be more patient and not run with them," he said.

Arizona lost to UCD, 6-1, in a tournament earlier this season that had no impact on the standings. The Wildcats were without most of their key players, who were either unable to make the trip or sat out the game after a long weekend.

The other semifinal pits North Division No. 1 seed Stanford, a team Dreiband calls "awesome," against South No. 3 seed UC-Santa Barbara.

"If we get to the final we're playing Stanford, no doubt in my mind," Dreiband said.

Deal said Arizona lost to Stanford four years ago when she was a freshman.

The championship and third place game will be played Sunday. The games are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m., but which game will take place in which time slot has yet to be determined.
