UA sophomore Jean-Noel Lacoste and senior Mike MacKay advanced to the tennis quarterfinals of the Thunderbird Invitational at ASU this weekend.

Lacoste defeated David Robles from NAU (6-3, 6-2) and Akram Zaman (6-4, 6-4) before losing in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Paul Martin of Texas (6-3, 6-2). MacKay defeated Martin Kristoffersen of Minnesota (6-3, 6-4) and Brian O'Grady of Arizona State (6-3, 6-2) before falling to Ed Carter of Arizona State (6-4, 6-3).

On the women's side, at the ASU/Miss Karen's Fall Classic in Phoenix, junior Monique Allegre and freshman Joanna Buczkowska advanced to the quarterfinal round by defeating Mirja Wallmark and Anja Tragardh of the University of San Diego by default on Saturday. Later in the day, Allegre and Buczkowska ended their run with a loss to Reka Cseresnyes and Celena McCoury of Arizona State (8-1).

It was first tournament under newly hired head coach Stephanie London who replaced long-time coach Becky Bell.

Briefly

Intramural signups begins today for four fall activities. Soccer, three-on-three basketball and volleyball will all have men's, women's and coed divisions. The cost for these sports is $40 per team.

There will also be signups for tennis doubles in the tournament sports category that will cost seven dollars per person or $14 per team of two.

The signups for all four of the sports will be from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the upstairs office of the campus recreation department at the Student Recreation Center.

Games, since Arizona won back-to-back football games prior to Saturday. Saturday's 28-22 triumph over Stanford and the 31-28 victory over San Diego State on Oct. 4 marked the first consecutive wins since the Wildcats defeated Washington State and Oregon State on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 on the road during the 1995 season.
