Soccer team sets win record against Washington State

With less than five minutes left in yesterday's game against Washington State, senior defender Melissa Kessler scored her second goal of the season propelling the Wildcats to a couple of landmarks in their young history.

Kessler's goal, off of a corner kick from sophomore Krista Bogdan, lifted the Wildcats to a 1-0 win over WSU in their first-ever victory over the Cougars. The win also put Arizona past the six-win mark in a season for the first time since its inception in 1994.

Two minutes after Kessler's goal, junior forward Nikki Jones blasted a shot off the crossbar in Arizona's only opportunity for an insurance goal.

The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Wildcats and moved them to 7-6-1 overall and 1-2 in Pacific 10 Conference play.

For the first time in more than a year, Arizona recorded a win in the conference.

The Wildcats outshot their opponent for the first time in four matches with an 18-14 edge over WSU.

Friday's game against Washington was a different story as the Wildcats were outshot 19-4 on their way to a 1-0 loss.

Washington junior Casey Dickerson tapped the Huskies' only goal of the game past UA freshman goalkeeper Inger Airheart at the 63-minute mark. Dickerson's goal came when she deflected teammate Malia Arrant's 15-yard shot.

Arizona had a free kick in the last two minutes of the game just outside the 18-yard box, but freshman Elena Galvan had her kick deflected by the Husky defensive wall.

The Huskies moved to 5-8 overall and remained undefeated in Pac-10 play, tying them for first place with their third win.

Arizona returns home to Murphey Stadium this weekend for another pair of Pac-10 matches. On Friday, the Wildcats will face Oregon at 7 p.m., followed by Sunday's game with Oregon State at 1 p.m.
