Junior fullback Kelvin Eafon does whatever it takes to get into the end zone as he rides Washington cornerback Mel Miller for a score during Saturday's 58-28 loss. Eafon finished the game with 140 yards and three touchdowns.

It's hard enough replacing one of the top runners in the conference.

It's even harder doing it while playing the top-rated team in the conference.

Lost amid Arizona's disastrous setback to Washington, UA running back Kelvin Eafon had one of the best days of his career, rushing for 140 yards on 23 carries and three touchdowns.

"If we can all just play like Kelvin Eafon we'd have done better," said UA head coach Dick Tomey after the lopsided defeat. "To me he's such a warrior, such a competitor."

When asked if his performance was bittersweet considering the 58-28 final score, Eafon replied, "It ain't sweet at all. If I rush for 140 yards and we don't win I don't really care about it. I'd rather rush for four yards and have us win."

Eafon broke through the Husky defense with 3:49 left in the first quarter, cutting Washington's lead to 14-7.

That was as close as the Wildcats got.

"That was terrific," said Tomey of Eafon's first touchdown. "We seemed like we could move the ball well, but everything fell apart."

On Eafon's next score, he was handed the ball at the Washington 6-yard line. As he barreled into the end zone, a Husky corner lifted Eafon over his head, but Eafon's momentum carried them both into the end zone.

"A play like that? You'd have to go back to high school," said Eafon of scoring a touchdown that way.

On his last touchdown in the fourth quarter, Eafon carried half the Husky line across the goal line.

"I don't let nobody keep me out of the end zone," Eafon said.

He went on to credit the UA offensive line for his success on the day.

"Every one of those guys blocks his heart out," he said. "Our offensive line always does a great job."

Assessing his own performance, Eafon summed it up in three words that told the story of the entire game: "Not good enough."
