Winner of Ward 6 seat to represent UA area in council

One seat on the Tucson City Council is up for grabs in today's election; while two other council members run unopposed:

Ward 6

The only contested city council race this year is in Ward 6, where Democrat Alison Hughes, Republican Frederick Ronstadt and Libertarian Dan Starr Dougherty are competing to represent Ward 6, which includes the University of Arizona.

Hughes is associate director of the University of Arizona Rural Health Office and was the first director of the Tucson Women's Commission. She is in favor of Proposition 202 which calls for a $7-an -hour minimum wage. She is opposed to Proposition 201 and the county transportation bonds.

Ronstadt is a financial analyst for HealthPartners Health Plans. He is opposed to Propositions 200 and 202, but is in favor of the county transportation bonds.

Dougherty is a self-employed piano teacher. He is in favor of Proposition 201 and is opposed to Propositions 200, 202, and the county transportation bonds.

Ward 5

Democrat Steve Leal will retain the Ward 5 position he has held since 1989, as he is one of two candidates running unopposed for council seats this year.

Leal was appointed as Tucson vice-mayor in 1991-92 and again in 1996. He received a graduate degree in political science from the University of Arizona in the late 1970s.

In the past, Leal favored of diversifying the Tucson economy and reducing taxes and fees for Tucson citizens. Ward 5 governs south central Tucson.

Ward 3

Democrat Jerry Anderson is running unopposed for the seat representing this northeast-side ward. His office did not return repeated phone calls yesterday.
