Showcase features student research

All the student research that goes on behind the scenes will finally have its day in the limelight.

This weekend's 1997 Homecoming Student Showcase will allow community members, faculty, students and alumni to examine the intellectual pursuits of more than 100 University of Arizona students.

The fifth annual Showcase will feature university-funded research done by graduate and undergraduate students from every department at the UA, said Kari Dorow, Student Showcase director and sociology junior.

The displays will be judged by UA faculty, staff and students in a variety of contests with $8,000 in prizes available.

The Graduate and Professional Student Council organized the Showcase.

"Our goal is to inform the university and community of the wonderful research projects that students do at UA," said Maria Teresa Velez, dean of the graduate college and Homecoming alumni faculty advisor associate.

The awards include a Women in Science and Engineering and Mathematics Award, a Best of Show award and two President's Awards presented by UA President and keynote speaker Peter Likins.

Dorow said she anticipates over 5,000 visitors throughout the two-day Showcase. Part of Saturday's attractions will be Likins' keynote speech, she said.

The Student Showcase is today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and tomorrow from noon to 4 p.m. on the UA Mall.
