By Jason Caywood MEChA singled outAfter reading the article on the front page of last thursdays Wildcat (11/13) I was quite puzzled by the headline above it. The first line of the ariticle reads, "A UA Hispanic student action group may have some competition for a vacant north campus building they pegged as a possible site for a Chicano dorm and community center." Compare that to the headline,"MEChA faces foes for north campus property". The article goes on the provide some basic information on the building, its history, and why it's being sold. But primarily the article focus' is on MEChA's interest and plans for the site. This leads me to a comment and a question. MEChA is not the only group or organization interested in this site. Why then was MEChA singled out for this article? Were you looking for some juicy spin on an otherwise boring story about a piece of property changing hands or is this a free plug for MEChAl In reflecting upon the piece I couldn't help but wonder if the headline was a Freudian slip that betrays some favor the writer or editor has toward MEChA. It would have been far better to include much more than MEChA in an article on this building, both in the interest of fairness and to avoid any hint of a conflict of interest on the part of the Wildcat.
