Laxcats open season with easy win

The Laxcats decided to show a small school from Colorado what Arizona lacrosse is all about and why they are ranked third in the nation on Saturday. The Colorado School of the Mines came into Arizona with some confidence and class but, after a 19-2 loss, it left with a good lesson learned.

"I thought we played well for our first game," Laxcat attackmen and captain Dan Price said. "I'm pleasantly surprised because we played well as a team and it was fun."

Nine Laxcat players scored including three goals and three assists from Price and five goals from midfielder Chris Stinson.

Senior captain Josh Sfara added a hat trick and junior midfielder Dan McCarthy had two goals and an assist.

"We played well as a team, but we still have a ways to go," Arizona head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said. "Under the circumstances and the number of players, I am very happy."

The Laxcats play host to seventh-ranked Sonoma State and Ft. Lewis College next weekend.Last year Arizona beat Sonoma State 12-11 in overtime at Sonoma State and denied them a trip to St. Louis for the Final Four when UA beat them in the playoffs 19-17.
