Staff Reports SidelinesArizona baseball players swept the Pacific 10 Conference's Southern Division pitcher and player of the week awards. Left fielder Jason Hendricks was named Six-Pac player of the week for the second week in a row, becoming the first UA player ever to achieve that honor back-to-back. Left-handed pitcher Rob Shabansky was named pitcher of the week for his efforts against Baylor. Hendricks hit .636 with two home runs and six RBI in a three-game sweep of Baylor. He was also named Collegiate Baseball's national co-player of the week. The senior is the first Wildcat since Todd Devereaux in 1988 to win the honor twice in one season. Hendricks won the award despite his consecutive games home run streak stopping at six, one short of George Arias' school record and two short of the national collegiate record. Shabansky struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to his fourth win of the season against no defeats. He walked just one batter in the 15-2 victory over the then-No. 13 Baylor Bears. For Arizona, it was the first time since Chris Gump and Carlos Rico in 1992 that two Wildcats shared the honors.
BrieflyApparently being head of the entire athletic department at a Division I university is not enough for Jim Livengood. UA's athletic director has managed to take on two more responsibilities. He has recently been named president of both the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Division 1-A Athletic Directors Association. Livengood is the first person to hold both leadership roles at the same time. This week schools throughout Tucson have been celebrating the importance of reading during Love of Reading Week. UA athletes from tennis, gymnastics and women's basketball have been helping out by going to schools to read books and discuss the value of literacy to children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
By the Numbers0: The number of wins the Arizona State Ice Devils now have after forfeiting all of their games because of an ineligible player. Arizona State had won the last four contests with the Arizona Icecats this season. Due to ASU's disqualification, the Icecats will move into their slot at the ACHA National Tournament for the 14th straight year.
