Men's tennis improves record to 3-5

The Arizona men's tennis team boosted its record to 3-5 after a 4-3 victory Thursday over San Diego.
Arizona senior Adnan Novo defeated Ricardo Rizo at the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
"Adnan played some solid tennis," assistant coach Bob Helmig said. "He keeps backing up his wins with more wins."
Also winning were junior Jean-Noel LaCoste, junior Michel Stopa and freshman Caleb Marquardt.
"Stopa played a very spirited and gutsy match," Helmig said. "It was a great win that clinched the match."
Senior Pascal Salasca and LaCoste played at the 110th annual Pac Coast doubles tournament at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club on Friday through Sunday.
"They did a great job winning the first (set)," Helmig said.
Salasca and LaCoste weren't so lucky in their next two sets, falling to a pair of Stanford players 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Helmig wasn't discouraged by the defeat.
"It was some of the best play I've seen our guys play," he said.

The Arizona women's tennis team lost at Stanford and California this weekend.
The Wildcats took two matches Friday from No. 5-ranked Stanford, but still lost 7-1.
The lone win in singles came from senior Monique Allegre over Gabriela Lastra 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Allegre and freshman Lindsay Blau defeated Lastra and Lauren Kalvaria 9-7 in doubles. UA didn't win the doubles point because a team must win two out of three matches.In other matches, Blau was defeated by Teryn Ashley 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, Stanford's Lauren Kalvaria defeated sophomore Joanna Buczkowska 6-2, 7-5, Stanford's Keiko Tokuda defeated junior Vanessa Abel 6-3, 6-2 and UA freshman Carly Stringer lost to Sarah Pestieau 7-5, 6-7, 7-6.
The Bears swept UA 7-0 Saturday.
The Wildcats came away with one set the entire match. Stringer lost to Cal's Jenny Lee 7-6, 3-6, 6-3.
