Please turn off your cell phones and pagers

To the editor,

This is an addendum to the article by René Alegria and cell phones. I was hoping that the people who bring cell phones into class wouldn't do it anymore. It is very distracting to be immersed in a lecture, then hear a phone ring. If I had a nickel for every time this happened, I could almost afford a book at the bookstore.

So, I encourage all you students out there, who can't wait to get the word of the day from your honey or to see if Mom and Dad will send you that check for spring break in Hawaii, to wait fifty minutes.

Also, while we are on the topic of disruption, can you also please keep your pagers on vibrate? I know I am asking for nearly a capital offense, but this is the courteous thing to do.

I know I am not the only one to feel this way, and I have also heard many professors plead for this. So do the right thing. Turn them off for 50 minutes.
