To the editor,

Inequality and discrimination are words that make most people angry.

Inequality and discrimination are unacceptable acts in today's society, and rank among the most heinous of crimes. "Gender equality studies" are

launched to assure that people's rights are protected and everything is fair.

But take a step back for a minute. Take a step back into a world where rights do not exist. Take a step back to where no one has any rights at all. What comes to mind? Hitler, Milosevic, slavery, oppression, tyranny?

Socially outrageous situations occur, right? In most cases. But what if there were no rights because no one claimed rights? Let me repeat that.

What if there were no rights because no one claimed rights? Sure, I have the right to keep the money I earn at work, but I give up that right. After all, you are hungry, and although I'm not rich by human standards, I will give up what I do have. Okay, I have the right to that parking space, but hey, I can find another one. I'll give up that right so you can benefit. I have the right to be paid the same as you, but instead of being jealous, I will rejoice with your success, and work as hard as I can. Even if it means I lose everything while you gain everything.

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (Philippians 2:3-4, emphasis added)

An impossibility? Definitely. A high standard? Absolutely. Better than what we have now? No doubt about it.

So what about you and me? Do we want to change the world? Do we want to right the wrongs? Then let's start with ourselves. When was the last time I did something selfish, robbing my fellow man of something rightfully mine?

I am just as guilty as anyone else for the inequality that exists today. I am sure that you are too.

Do you want to end discrimination? Then discriminate against yourself. Of course, that probably cuts to your heart. You may realize that you cannot do it, and that you will just add to discrimination and inequality throughout your life despite all your efforts to the contrary.

How can it be done?

"With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible." (Mark 10:27).

Do you want to change the world? The Bible tells how. On our own, it is impossible, but with God, through His Son Jesus Christ, anything is possible - even in America.
