Former UA star basketball player Sean Elliott said Monday that he could receive a new kidney from a member of his family.

"The good news is there is a possibility that a member of my family could be a match," Elliott said in a statement. "But at this point, it is too early to tell. There are still further tests to conduct and until all of the tests are complete, it is premature to make any predictions as to whether a match will be found."

KSAT-TV in San Antonio reported that a source close to Elliott confirmed one of the player's two brothers, Noel or Robert, is a match.

Elliott, now with the San Antonio Spurs, announced last week that he needs a kidney transplant to avoid undergoing dialysis.

Elliott, who played basketball at Cholla High School, has been in Mexico on vacation since the announcement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
