A fugitive chased by police after a downtown shooting early Friday tried to take refuge in a university-area apartment complex before he and two associates were apprehended by a Tucson police canine unit, police said.

One man was grazed by a bullet in a shooting that stemmed from a fight in front of the Greyhound Bus Station, 2 S. Fourth Ave., about 1:25 a.m., said Sgt. Brett Klein of the Tucson Police Department. The man was treated at University Medical Center and released.

Klein said three men, later identified as Francisco Hernandez, 20; Gilberto Madrid, 22; and Leonardo Leon, 19, all of Tucson, drove away immediately after the shooting.

The three reportedly sped to East Speedway Boulevard and North Park Avenue, parked their brown Isuzu Trooper and ran north.

Police chased them toward University Heights Apartments, 1201 N. Park Ave.

"One of the men went into an apartment," Klein said, adding he was unsure which suspect fled into the residence.

"A (police) dog was used to get him out," he said. "He was bitten by the dog and then surrendered."

According to Klein, police did not recover any weapons from the men or from the car.

"They probably pitched them," he said.

Hernandez and Madrid were both charged on suspicion of aggravated assault and participating in a drive-by shooting. They were booked into the Pima County Jail.

Leon was cited on suspicion of underage drinking and released.
