To the editor,

This past weekend, the Family Weekend Staff received numerous complaints regarding the cover design of the Arizona Daily Wildcat Supplement printed on Friday, Oct. 9.

Even though the front page did read "Family Weekend Supplement," we want to be very clear in stating that at no time and in no manner did the Family Weekend Office, which is a committee of the University Activities Board, have any input to the concept that was depicted.

As the organization that spent a full year planning a weekend of activities and events for more than 3,000 visitors, we were extremely shocked to open the paper and see the graphic images that were chosen to represent our university.

We realize that the Arizona Daily Wildcat is an accredited newspaper and has the right to choose what to print. However, we feel that the artwork chosen was an inappropriate choice for families to see as a welcome to the university that their students are attending. The idea of Family Weekend is for the families to visit their student and experience a little bit of their campus life. The images found in the cover design were not the positive image that we, as a university, should be portraying, especially to the families of the students.

We also want to apologize to the readers for the incorrect information that was given regarding some Family Weekend events, including times and locations for activities that were being put on by the Family Weekend staff.

The Arizona Daily Wildcat did not approach us regarding changes in event times and locations that were made since our initial calendar of events was printed back in May of this year.

Again, we would like to stress that we had no part in the conception, decision to use or implementation of the artwork used in the Arizona Daily Wildcat Family Weekend Supplement. We hope that the families who participated in Family Weekend 1998 fully enjoyed themselves and were not negatively influenced or offended by the publication.
