Famed attorney to speak at UA
An attorney whose life is being made into a major Hollywood movie will speak tonight at 7:30 in the Memorial Student Union Arizona Ballroom.
The Associated Students Speaker's Board is paying about $10,000 for Jan Schlichtmann, an attorney who defended the families of children who died of Leukemia after drinking contaminated well water, to come to campus.
A Pulitzer-prize winning book, A Civil Action, was written about Schlichtmann, and he has been featured on CBS' 60 Minutes news program. The book has been made into a movie, starring John Travolta as Schlichtmann, which opens in theaters Dec. 25.
Justin Klump, ASUA's speaker's board director, said attorney Johnnie Cochran will speak at the University of Arizona next semester and will also be paid $10,000.
Schlichtmann and Cochran's speeches are managed by the same company, and Klump said the organization is giving the UA "more bang for the buck."
The $10,000 fee is "all-inclusive," Klump said, and Schlichtmann will stay at a local hotel at ASUA's cost.
Klump said the speech will last about one hour and will focus on the case and the book on his life. After the event, he will answer questions and sign copies of the biography.
