UA lucky to have Escort Service
To the editor,
Kudos for running the guest commentary "Not even the ASUA Escort Service is immune" by Rachel Reinhardt and Christina Moshier in your Friday, November 13 issue.
Their column served to underscore the serious issue of crime on this campus and the fact that we often allow ourselves to let our guard down because of a false sense of security derived from low crime statistics.
As students at this university, we should consider ourselves exceedingly lucky that we have the Escort Service in the first place. Many colleges in America do not have any kind of a safe ride program, much less one as expedient and reliable as our Escort Service is. We may never know exactly how many robberies and assaults, or worse, rapes and murders may have been prevented in large part due to the efforts of the escorts in ensuring that those who request the service get from one place to another safely.
As long as there is ugliness between people in this world , there will be a need for organizations like the Escort Service. They are the unsung heroes on our campus whose efforts are utilized by many but applauded by too few. We should honor the escorts by respecting the purpose of the service, whichis to be looked at as a means of protecting people getting from one place to another on and around campus rather than as a taxi service.
This organization is taxed to the limit each year by the high cost of providing their service, and appropriate use of it will help the service to be able to reach out to even more people who need it.
