In Ward's defense

To the editor,

I would like to thank John A. Whitney IV for his letter to the editor in Monday's Wildcat. Not because it was concise; not because it was well-researched, and not because he was brave enough to speak his mind.

Even though Whitney's letter is all the above things, that's not why I thank him.

I thank you for throwing all of your credibility out the window by making personal attacks on Jon Ward.

I'm not a vegetarian, and I don't think I could ever muster the willpower to be one. I still think that veggie is definitely the right path to take.

Jon and I were in the same high school English classes, and I've always respected his intelligence. He spouts off the mouth all right, but his spouting isn't propaganda. I'm sure Jon could write a research paper that would make the statements in your letter look ridiculous. Had you done a little more research, you would have found that Jon is already a published novelist.

But the article you read last Thursday was a column, not a research paper or a novel. Citing sources would have cluttered the article and made it less interesting, and it would have detracted from its purpose.

Jon likes to create awareness about the stupidities of society, and his columns this semester have done so brilliantly. The Wildcat is lucky to have him.

How many carnivores became straight vegans after they read Jon's column? Probably none. How many questioned their beliefs after reading the column? I'm sure that several did. How many questioned their beliefs so much that they spent hours in the library digging for facts to support their shaky beliefs? I know of at least one. Look in the mirror, Whitney.
