KAMP radio looking for FM

KAMP Student Radio is still without an FM frequency after a semester-long search.

The University of Arizona student radio station launched a two month search in August to locate an available FM frequency. The station, which hired a consulting firm to do a computerized search, found that two frequencies could accommodate the signal - but both conflicted with existing KUAT radio stations.

It was suggested that KAMP could share with KUAT 1550 AM's sister station, KUAZ 89.1 FM, but the public radio company chose Nov. 13 not to allow the student station to broadcast on its frequency. KUAT officials said that by allowing KAMP to share its FM frequency, KUAT would lose 40,000 listeners in the Tucson Foothills and Green Valley.

KAMP 1570 AM has been limited by a weak signal and lack of modern equipment since it started operating in 1988. But it was granted an extra $35,000 per semester for five years after student voters approved a $1 optional fee for the station in March 1997.

With no FM frequency in sight, KAMP is working with residence life to extend audibility to reach the dorms and the Student Recreation Center. The station, which only can be heard on campus, can also be accessed via the Internet and RealAudio.
