From Staff Reports

The UA Museum of Art director died Saturday of a heart attack at the age of 61.

Peter Bermingham came to the University of Arizona in 1978 and assumed the role of museum director. He worked at the UA to double the museum's collection and coordinated more than 200 exhibitions.

"He came to Tucson and really built this institution into a first-class one," said Eleanor Bermingham, his widow.

Before his time at the university, he served five years as curator of the Smithsonian National Museum of Art.

After earning his doctorate from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Bermingham taught art history at the University of Cincinnati from 1971-72. He also received a master's in art history from the University of Maryland.

Bermingham is survived by his wife, Eleanor, sons, Christopher, Jason, Alexander, Nicholas, and daughter, Noel, of San Francisco.

The Bermingham family asked that donations be made to the UA Foundation and UA Museum of Art in lieu of flowers.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at St. Thomas Valley Church.

The UA Museum of Art is scheduling a memorial service at a later date. Details are available from the museum by calling 621-7567.
