To the editor,

As the parent of an out-of-state freshman enrolled at the University of Arizona, I am outraged at the stance being taken by the Residence Life director to give little priority to returning students who wish to continue living in the dorms.

Since returning students have already made a financial commitment to the university, it seems only appropriate that they be given first priority for dorm space. Returning students are already a part of the university community whereas freshmen are not. Perhaps the administration should consider limiting the size of the next class. To jettison current students from campus will alienate them from the university and not promote any goodwill.

This notice also seems to be a spur of the moment decision. If the administration finds it necessary to limit the number of returning students in the dorms, there needs to be a phasing in of the new program. There must be an alternative method to accomplish this goal that is more satisfactory to all parties involved.
