More bits and pieces on UA athletics...

A big set of props to all the fans at last Thursday's UA-Stanford game. You yelled with the best of them, and storming the court was quite a sight.

Eugene Edgerson said he'd never have imagined such a sight because of the old-to-young fan disparity at McKale. But all 100 or so students there stormed the court, and did it in a manner that Oregon State's pack of idiot-savant delinquents should take notice of.

Still, fans at McKale still need to learn a few things to make the arena as intimidating as The Pit or Maples Pavilion:

Do not stop cheering. You don't need your voice tomorrow. Even when there's a time-out, even when the other team goes on an 8-0 run, keep yelling.

Mock the opposition. Come on, Peter Sauer's hair alone was worth a good bit of ridicule.

No laser pointers. For the love of God, everyone on Earth not working in some pseudo-Dilbert hell should not be allowed to have one of those.

In the end, though, at least the McKale fans can beat The Pit fans in one area:

The intellectual value of their taunting.

"Hey, Wright! You're wrong!"

Ooo, that hurt...

Icecats head coach Leo Golembiewski picked up his 400th win this weekend when his team beat Marquette, 7-2.

A club sport or not, winning 400 games as a coach on any level is something impressive.

Getting it with a team that consists almost entirely of freshmen and sophomores is even more impressive.

Still, win No. 411 might be even more memorable, since if he gets it this year, it will be in the national championship game.

With the Icecats 17-3-1 and ranked No. 4 in the country, it's not out of the question...

In case anyone missed it, the Arizona women's swimming team is really good, having swept Texas, Texas A&M and Miami in a four-way meet this weekend.

The rematch against Stanford in the Pac-10 Championships Feb. 25-27, should be a preview of the NCAA Championships in March...

The women's basketball team took a hit with the loss of Tatum Brown to academic problems yesterday.

Without her, the women have some serious size problems inside.

In other words, don't count on a Sweet 16 appearance this year...

The Arizona baseball team has looked good so far, but as it was last year, it's been against some sub-par opposition. The difference is this year, instead of going into the Pac-10 untested, the Wildcats get Texas A&M at home Feb. 12-14, and they play in a tournament in San Diego Feb. 18-21.

Still, Dennis Anderson is looking like a stud so far behind the plate, but so did Greg Clark at the beginning of last year, and anyone who watched the team remembers Clark did an offensive disappearing act down the stretch.

Cross your fingers and hope Anderson is just different enough from the now-St. Louis Cardinals' farmhand to avoid such a slump when it matters the most...

Speaking of the Lobos, anyone notice their soon-to-be disappearing act from the top 25? When most teams beat Arizona they don't go out and get crushed by the following teams on the road, New Mexico State and UTEP, and then get throttled by Utah in The Pit.

Maybe Lute Olson was right in canceling the home-and-home series after all.
