The UA women's softball team will try to defend its Pacific 10 Conference title for the third consecutive year, beginning its season today at 2 p.m., hosting Illinois-Chicago.

"The team, mainly the younger players, just need to realize we need to perform well everyday starting now," UA head coach Mike Candrea said.

The No. 2 Wildcats will continue play tomorrow afternoon at the same time, same field at Hillenbrand Stadium, as well as Sunday, taking on New Mexico State and Washington.

Candrea is very confident in his team going into this tournament, and feels that each game will be a good starting point for the Wildcats to see where they are at in retrospect to other teams.

"Illinois Chicago has been in the World Series," he said. "New Mexico is a much improved program and Washington will help us know where we fall in that respect (in Pac-10 conference)."
