Men's swimmers in 3rd after 1st day of NCAAs

The UA men's swimming and diving team is in third place after one day at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis.

Texas is in first with 173 points, followed by Auburn (151), Arizona (114.5), California (100) and Stanford (88).

Individually for the men, senior Ryk Neethling won his eighth individual title in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:40.47, which is a new U.S. Open record.

Sophomore Roland Schoeman placed second in the 50 free, losing by only .01 second to California freshman Anthony Ervin, who swam a 21.21. Both swimmers' times were better than the old world record of 21.31.

The 200 free relay of Schoeman, senior Coley Stickels, senior Rob Henikman and junior Jay Schryver finished third with a time of 1:26.74.

In the diving competition, sophomore Ruben Vaca placed ninth.

The three-day meet resumes today at 10 a.m.
