Broken water main causes flooding at sorority house

Talk about this story

A broken sprinkler main caused minor flooding and "significant" damage to the Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority house yesterday afternoon.

Dave Cox, a firefighter with the Tucson Fire Department, said that the pipe broke about 12:55 p.m. Despite efforts from the members of the sorority, the inside of the house was damaged as well.

"They were trying to block the doors with towels, trying to keep the water from getting inside, but it got in anyway," Cox said.

Gina Goren, a media arts sophomore and Alpha Epsilon Phi social chair, said members stayed inside the house because there was too much water outside.

"The water got so high, it started to come through the doors," Goren said. "The door had so much water against it that if we'd opened it, it would have flooded in."

Goren said damage to the house was significant.

"We'll have to get new carpet, we just got new flowers planted in the garden, and those are ruined, and the paint on the patio is chipped," Goren said, although she wouldn't speculate about the cost of repair.

No one was injured in the incident, and Goren added that members of the house took it well.

"We were joking about putting on our swimsuits," Goren said. "We've always wanted a pool."
