Series of incidents since fall spur UA, TPD collaboration

The Tucson Police Department Wednesday announced an investigation of a series of UA-area indecent exposure incidents.

Since last fall, TPD has received 19 reports of a man exposing himself in the neighborhoods near the north edge of the University of Arizona campus. In all cases the suspect was wearing a mask, according to the TPD.

Sgt. Marco Borboa, TPD spokesman, said all the incidents happened within the early afternoon hours.

"Mid afternoon to 1 p.m. - that's the time frame we have for all 19 of the incidents," Borboa said.

The latest incident occurred on April 16, at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of North Tyndall Avenue. The man exposed himself to two females who were in the pool area.

While the TPD was not previously able to get a composite sketch of the man, Borboa said they were lucky to get a description.

"It was fortunate that someone recalled seeing him walk in the complex (without his mask)," Borboa said. "What we find typically of victims especially in the early or late times of the day is that they don't recall what he looks like."

UAPD spokesman Sgt. Mike Smith said most of the incidents have occurred in TPD's area, although the two departments are collaborating on the investigation.

Four similar incidents have been reported to UAPD since September. Those in November and January involved the man exposing himself in front of the Pi Beta Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta sorority houses.

"He has not hit our jurisdiction as much as the jurisdiction of the Tucson Police Department, but we are working in cooperation with them," Smith said.

TPD released a composite sketch of the man Wednesday. He is described as a Hispanic man, 29-40 years old, with dark brown hair. He is also described as 5'10", 170 pounds and "stocky but not muscular."

Anybody with information is asked to call the Adult Sex Crimes Unit at 791-4492 or 88-CRIME.
