Puritanism unwarranted

By Layne Mostyn

To the editor,

I was somewhat dismayed to read some readers' commentaries on the UA Playboy models. I am not endorsing Playboy in any way. I cannot help but feel Playboy's views and values of human beings have gone awry, but that does not make the human form ugly.

I am disappointed in old-fashioned statements like, "As women, we do have control over our own bodies. By keeping them covered, we can be a positive influence in helping women maintain the respect that we all deserve." To me, these kinds of views are reminiscent of the puritanical ones women have been struggling to break free of in western society for many years.

As for the quote, "Vulgarity should not and cannot be deemed as art," art is everywhere. Anything at all could be considered art, even if others deem it vulgar. Maturity levels dictate what is art and what is considered sexual.

I do hope people come to realize that art is all about what they see and what they feel. One must rise above the childish views of the average American in today's society to see things for what they are.
